How to Add a Faux Stucco Finish to an Inside Wall

You can apply a faux stucco finish to your interior walls with drywall plaster. Using a technique called "stippling" you can create the rough texture that stucco is famous for. With the use of drywall plaster and the stippling technique, you can faux-stucco a wall in a room as an accent wall, painting it a color that runs a shade darker than the rest of walls in the room.

Things You'll Need

• Water bottle
• 400-grit sandpaper
• Tack cloth
• Drywall plaster
• Trowel
• Lamb's wool roller
• Latex primer
• Latex paint

Instructions

1. Wet the wallpaper with a spray bottle filled with hot water and scrape the wallpaper off the walls with a wallpaper scraper. Once you scrape the walls, sand them with 400-grit sandpaper, then wipe them down with a tack cloth. If you do not have wallpaper, simply sand and wipe the wall.

2. Apply a ¼-inch coat of drywall plaster over the surface of the walls with a trowel. Overlap each row of plaster by 50 percent to avoid horizontal or vertical lines in the plaster. Wait 15 minutes before you move on.

3. Roll over the surface of the drywall plaster with a lamb's wool roller. Use a light touch. Do not press hard to simply move the plaster around on the wall. A light touch will add texture. When the roller loads up with drywall plaster, replace it with a new roller. Allow at least 24 hours' drying time.

4. Apply a single coat of latex primer to the wall. Use a lamb's wool roller. Use a W pattern and overlap each stroke by 50 percent to ensure good coverage. Repeat the process 24 hours later with latex paint.
