How to Answer Questions for a TV Host Audition

Congratulations! You've got your degree in mass communications, television broadcasting, broadcast journalism or public speaking. You've made a demo tape of all of your past television, radio or personal performances. Your fact sheet detailing your accomplishments and showing a good photo of yourself is impressive. Most important -- you have an audition. Next comes the most challenging part: presenting yourself and responding effectively during the interview.

Answer questions truthfully and enthusiastically. If the job is a good fit with your interests, any topic they ask you about should come naturally to you. Show that you care about and are well-versed in the topic enough to capture an audience's attention. Depending on the program, talk show hosts generally are able to provide entertaining commentary and ask interesting questions on many topics. Whether interviewing for a job as host of a game show, reality show or sports show, you should know your primary topic and be able to talk about it.

Answer questions with confidence and allow your own unique personality to show through. Allow your outgoing, friendly persona to shine while still appearing professional and trustworthy. Talk show hosts entertain and carry the show so people will return to see them again and again. Depending on the program's tone, be humorous or serious as needed. Communication is key. You must demonstrate that you have stage presence and the skills to interact with all personality types.

Provide practical, easy to apply solutions to any situational scenarios you are asked to respond to, and be sure to reply in simple, clear language. Most talk show hosts have the ability to empower and showcase their guests by setting a very comfortable, friendly tone. Demonstrate that you have this ability to put people at ease.

Sell yourself and your abilities. Tell them of your experiences, how you excelled in different situations and how you solved troublesome situations. Think of situations that might commonly occur in the hosting position and prepare solutions to those problems beforehand so you will have immediate answers to give to solve those problems. If you need to think about a solution, look down while you are doing so. This gives the appearance of looking thoughtful instead of grasping at straws.

Demonstrate through your answers that you will make the producer's job easier and make the show a success if hired. Give examples of who you would like to interview on the show and why. Present stimulating show ideas that will improve the show's ratings and draw an audience. Make your suggestions in creative, short promotional language relevant to the proposed show content. Provide one-liner story topics that tell them exactly what you can do for them to take the program to the top in its field.
