How to Arrange a Fashion Show

How to Arrange a Fashion Show thumbnail
Fashion for fundraising requires an organzied approach.

When you think of a fashion show you may think of designers in Paris showing off their latest lines or the outrageous clothes on TV reality shows. What you might not think of is using a fashion show to raise money for a worthy cause. Whatever the reason behind the show, spend some time in planning and arranging your fashion show. The event will go smoothly and you'll thank yourself when the show is a success.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the theme for your fashion show. It might be fall fashions, formalwear or sportswear, for example. Don't forget to include children, seniors and guys, if you think they'll appeal to your audience.

    • 2

Call on local dress shops, boutiques and children's wear stores to lend the clothing for the fashion show. Ask major department stores if they will contribute the clothing. If the fashion show is a charitable event, the stores may be more agreeable.

    • 3

Look on the calendar and decide on a date. Lunch is a good time because working women can attend if they extend their lunch hour a bit. Saturday means no work for most, but there's competition from other activities and home chores. The date should be at least eight weeks in advance to give you time to prepare everything.

    • 4

Book the room, preferably with a stage and ample seating. Some hotels have meeting rooms with a raised stage. Try schools; they often will lease out their facilities when the school is closed. Churches do the same.

    • 5

Recruit the models based on the theme. Find an announcer. Ask for workers to help set up the chairs or tables and break them down after the show. You'll also need helpers to assist the models if they'll be wearing more than one outfit. Ask for amateur photographers to photograph the event. You'll need people to be in charge of the sound, lighting and stage.

    • 6

Recruit hairstylists and makeup artists to assist with hair and makeup the day of the show. Arrange for them to be backstage to help with any mishaps or needed touch ups.

    • 7

Design the program for the fashion show, describing each outfit, what store it's from and the name of the model. Include the location and phone number of each store. Adding a photo of the store is a nice touch. Include the names of the volunteers and anyone who has donated time, such as hairstylists, or money to the event.

    • 8

Print the programs and tickets for the event. Sell tickets to the event.

    • 9

Select music for the show based on the theme of the show. Check that the music is in the public domain or find out how you pay for the usage.

    • 10

Rehearse the show several times so the models, announcer and stagehands feel comfortable.

    • 11

Promote the show through advertising and publicity.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask the volunteer photographers to act like the paparazzi at the beginning of the show by snapping lots of pictures. All the lights flashing will add to the excitement.

  • Be prepared for mishaps with a first-aid kit, sewing supplies, bottled water and stain removers.
