How to Fertilize Your Valencia

The Valencia orange is the most commonly planted variety across the globe. It bears medium to large oranges in February. Valencia, like all citrus trees, requires large amounts of nitrogen and varying amounts of phosphorous, sulfur, potassium and calcium. Ideally, Valencia growers use soil tests to determine which elements are lacking before fertilizing. County cooperative extension offices offer free or low-cost tests and assistance with deciphering the results. There are, however, general rules of thumb when fertilizing Valencias. Instructions

    • 1

Fertilize the Valencia in February, May and September.

    • 2

Use 1/3 cup of ammonium sulfate during each application in the Valencia's first year. Increase the amount to 1/2 cup in the second and third years. In subsequent years, use 1 cup per year of Valencia tree age, split over the three applications. A 6-year-old tree, therefore, receives 6 cups of fertilizer with 2 cups given during each application in February, May and September.

    • 3

Scatter the fertilizer on the soil 6 inches from the Valencia's trunk and spread it out to the dripline. Water to a depth of 10 inches after fertilizing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep an eye on the Valencia's foliage throughout the growing season. Yellow, dull or small leaves may be a sign of nutrient deficiencies or excesses. Have the foliage analyzed at the cooperative extension office to determine a course of action.
