An infant's body position can worsen or alleviate gassy symptoms.

As most parents know all too well, a gassy infant equals a fussy, unhappy infant. Babies often experience gas, which is sometimes due to swallowing air during feedings. This gas can cause tummy aches. Extended bouts of gas and the accompanying fussiness is sometimes referred to as "colic." You can treat gas in infants by employing some simple strategies that are effective and yet gentle and safe for your baby.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your baby in an upright position and burp her every minute or two, or as needed.

    • 2

Massage your infant's tummy gently or bicycle his legs in a smooth, easy motion while he is on his back.

    • 3

Keep your baby upright for 15 to 30 minutes after feedings.

    • 4

Eliminate products such as dairy products, spicy foods and caffeine-containing beverages from your diet if you are breastfeeding.

    • 5

Sit down and lay your baby belly-down across your thighs. Rock your baby back and forth.

    • 6

Give your infant simethicone drops. Follow the specific directions on the package.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes a gas problem in a baby simply takes time to resolve itself. As infants' digestive systems mature, they are less likely to have trouble with gas.

  • Call your pediatrician if your baby's condition doesn't improve within a couple of days or if the gas is accompanied by fever, sharp crying or other symptoms.
