How to Crochet a Head Warmer That Is Tapered at the Ends and Wide at the Top

Being bundled up with scarves, mittens and a head warmer is ideal in the winter, but isn't so comfortable when the garments are ill-fitting. A head warmer should be thick at the top for good ear coverage, but the thickness may cause discomfort at the back of your head. Crochet a head warmer that is tapered at the ends and wide at the top to keep you warm and comfortable in the cold.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn
  • Size "N" crochet hook

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area around your head where the head warmer will be worn. Wrap the tape measure from the nape of your neck, over your ears and up to your forehead. Keep this measurement for use while making the head warmer.

    • 2

Tie a slip knot at the end of the yarn and insert the crochet hook through the loop. Pull the knot tight, leaving enough room for the hook to move back and forth in the loop. Chain eight.

    • 3

Insert the crochet hook in the second chain from the hook and create a single crochet. Work single crochets into each of the next six chains. The first row will end with seven stitches. Chain one and turn the head warmer to work in the opposite direction for the next row.

    • 4

Work the second row by making a single crochet into each of the seven single crochets from the previous row. Chain one and turn. Repeat this process six times to complete rows 2 through 8.

    • 5

Begin the ninth row by creating two single crochets in the first single crochet. This increases the stitches in the row, creating the tapered portion of the head warmer. Work a single crochet into each of the remaining single crochets. Add a second single crochet into the last single crochet, exactly as the row started. The ninth row will end with nine stitches. Chain one and turn.

    • 6

Make a single crochet in each single crochet across the 10th row. Chain one and turn.

    • 7

Finish the tapered side of the head warmer over the next four rows. Follow and repeat Steps 5 and 6 twice to complete rows 11 through 14. The 14th row will end with 13 stitches.

    • 8

Crochet several even rows to create the body of the head warmer. Create a single crochet in each of the 13 single crochets from row 14. Chain one and turn to end the row. Repeat this process to create as many rows as needed to reach 5 inches less than the measurement taken from your head. For example, if the measurement was 18 inches, create as many rows as needed to reach 13 inches.

    • 9

Yarn over to begin the first row after the body of the head warmer. Pull the loop in the first single crochet up and onto the hook. Yarn over again and add the loop from the second single crochet onto the hook. Yarn over and pull the strand through all three loops on the hook, leaving a single loop. This decreases two stitches.

    • 10

Create a single crochet in each single crochet, but leave the last two single crochets empty. Use the last two single crochets in the row to decrease two more stitches. Use the yarn-over process from the beginning of the row by repeating Step 9. Chain one and turn.

    • 11

Finish tapering the end of the head warmer by decreasing the next four rows. Repeat Steps 9 and 10 twice, until the fourth row has only seven stitches.

    • 12

Create a single crochet in each of the seven single crochet from the previous row. Chain one and turn. Repeat this process seven times to create eight identical rows.

    • 13

Pull the first part of the head warmer around to the crochet hook, matching up the two ends. Create seven single crochets through each end, joining the two together. Chain one and turn to create the edging.

    • 14

Work along the edge of the head warmer and create a single crochet in each single crochet. Join with a slip stitch at the beginning. Cut the yarn, leaving a 2-inch tail.

    • 15

Pull the loop off the crochet hook. Push the yarn through the loop, securing it in place. Tie the yarn off and weave the tail into the stitches.

    • 16

Turn the head warmer over to the side with no edge. Create a slip stitch in the single crochet in the seam at the bottom. Chain one. Create a single crochet in each single crochet along the edge. Join with a slip stitch at the beginning.

    • 17

Cut and tie off the yarn as done on the first side. Turn the head warmer inside out, leaving the seam on the inside.
