How to Make a Fabric Crayon Roll
Keep busy little ones calm and entertained while on the go by providing them with paper and crayons. Store those crayons in a homemade crayon roll that keeps them organized and together, so you don't have to dig to the depths of your purse or diaper bag to find them.
Things You'll Need
- 1/4 yard cotton fabric
- Ruler
- Scissors
- 1/4-inch wide grosgrain ribbon
- Lighter
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Straight pins
Instructions

1
Cut two 13-by-6 inch rectangles and one 13-by-4 inch rectangle of fabric. Cut an 18-inch length of ribbon as well. Heat-seal the ends of the ribbon by holding them near the flame of a lighter for a few seconds. This prevents the ends of the ribbon from unraveling over time.
-
2
Fold one of the long edges of the 13-by-4 inch piece to the wrong side of the fabric 1/4 inch. Iron the fold. Fold the same edge another 1/4 inch and iron it again. Sew the folded edge with an 1/8-inch seam allowance.

3
Place one of the 13-by-6 inch rectangles on a work surface horizontally oriented with the right side face up. Place the hemmed 13-by-4 inch piece right side up on the 13-by-6 inch rectangle with the unhemmed 13-inch edge lined up with the bottom edge of the 13-by-6 inch piece. Sew the two pieces together from the bottom edge to the top hemmed edge of the hemmed rectangle 1 1/4 inches from each edge and every 3/4 inches between those two seams. This divides the hemmed rectangle into smaller sections that serve as individual pockets for the crayons.

4
Lay the pocketed piece on a work surface right side up, horizontally oriented. Fold the ribbon in half and place the folded edge of the ribbon centered along the right edge. Place the second 13-by-6 inch piece of fabric on top with the right side of the fabric face down. Pin the stack together along all four edges with straight pins.
-
5
Sew around the stack with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving only a 4-inch opening in the middle of any side other than the right edge where the ribbon is. Turn the piece right side out through the opening and flip the ribbon strips away from the fabric part of the crayon roll.
-
6
Fold in the raw edges of the fabric 1/2 inch along the opening, and iron the folds and the rest of the edges. Sew around the crayon roll with a 1/4-inch seam allowance to hold the seams flat.
-
7
Place a crayon in each pocket of the roll. Roll the roll up from left to right, and tie the roll up with the ribbon strips.

Tips & Warnings
You can make a crayon roll to hold more than 16 crayons by adding 3/4 inches to the length of the fabric pieces for each additional crayon.
