How to Braid Your Hair for Overnight Crimps

How to Braid Your Hair for Overnight Crimps thumbnail
Overnight crimps work best on damp hair.

Braiding is the process of interlacing strands of hair or rope to create a pretty interwoven pattern. Braids can be left in overnight and removed in the morning to create a crimped effect on the hair. This crimping technique is much more gentle on the hair than electrical crimpers, as braided crimps don't cause heat damage to the hair follicles. You can adjust the size of the braids to create loose or tight crimps depending on the style you wish to achieve. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Brush through the hair with a paddle brush to remove any knots or tangles.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of styling product evenly through the hair to help set the braids in place.

    • 3

Separate the section of hair that you want to braid; the size of the section depends on the size that you want the crimps to be. For tight crimps, gather a section of hair that's approximately 1-inch thick. If you want very loose crimps, gather all of the hair on the head and position it over one shoulder to create one big braid.

    • 4

Divide the section of hair into three equal sections. Separate the sections so that they're positioned vertically parallel next to one another.

    • 5

Lift the section on the left-hand side over the middle section. Lift the section on the right-hand side over the middle section. Repeat this technique until you have braided the desired length of hair.

    • 6

Secure the end of the braid in place by wrapping a clear elastic tightly around the bottom of it.

    • 7

Leave the braids to set overnight. Remove the hair elastic in the morning. Gently undo the braids with your fingers. Spray the crimps with hair spray to set them in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pull each section of hair with an equal amount of force to create a neat and even braid.

  • If you start with damp hair, ensure that the hair is fully dry before removing the crimps.

  • Never braid the hair so tightly that it pulls on the scalp.

  • Only spray hair spray in a well-ventilated area.
