How to Apply Eye Makeup at 40 Years Old
Fragile skin around the eye area is prone to environmental damage such as sun damage and to dryness as a woman ages. By the age of 40, wrinkles have usually started to appear underneath the eyes, and eyelids start to look saggy or "crepey." Gentle skin care routines and sun protection creams are essential to help preserve plump and youthful-looking skin. Mature women should also adopt subtle eye makeup techniques that make eyes look bigger and disguise early signs of aging. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Apply a thin layer of eye shadow primer, in a shade that matches your skin tone, to your eyelid from lash line to brow bone. Eye shadow primer evens out skin discoloration and provides a smooth surface that prevents eye shadow from slipping into skin creases.
-
2
Apply a light dusting of translucent powder over the eyelid primer, matching your skin tone.

3
Brush on highlighter in a pale shade, such as cream, underneath the eyebrow, along the brow bone and at the inner corner of each eye to emphasize eyebrow shape and give eyes a lifted effect. Choose highlighter with subtle shimmer.
-
4
Brush on matte eye shadow powder in a light neutral shade, such as beige, over the eyelid from the lash line to the socket line.
-
5
Apply powder eye shadow in a deeper shade, such as taupe, along the crease line by using a crease brush to give eyes depth and intensity. Blend the taupe shade upward and outward slightly from the center of the eyelid toward the outer corner of each eye to achieve a subtle lifting effect.

6
Apply a thin line of gel eyeliner in a medium to dark brown shade along the upper lid and close to the lash line, and along the lower lash line. Wing the eyeliner slightly upward at the outer edge of each eyelid.
-
7
Curl eyelashes by using an eyelash curler to achieve a more wide-awake look for small or droopy eyes.
-
8
Apply one coat of waterproof mascara to upper eyelashes only. Choose dark brown mascara if you are fair, black if you have medium or dark skin.

Tips & Warnings
Have your eyebrows professionally shaped as groomed eyebrows give your facial features a "lifted" appearance.
Avoid shimmery eye shadows that accentuate fine lines around the eyes.
Avoid thick black eyeliner as it makes eyes look smaller and more fatigued.
