How to Make a Cartoon of Yourself Without Taking a Photo

You can use a mirror to draw yourself instead of taking a picture.

Cartoons are notable for their generally artistically-simple take on the world around us. Simple linework and bold colors often separate cartoon art from other forms of drawing. Drawing yourself as a cartoon can be done by taking a photograph of yourself, but, in the absence of a camera, the use of a mirror can work equally well.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the mirror up on a desk or table so that you can see yourself in it.

    • 2

Arrange the paper, pencil, and markers or colored pencils all within easy reach.

    • 3

Using the pencil, begin to draw the basic features of your face, looking in the mirror often to ensure they are shaped properly. Begin with the shape of your head, and then add simple drawings for your eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

    • 4

Finish drawing your head by adding stylized hair, which can be drawn as just the outline of the shape of your hair style.

    • 5

Draw a simple body shape below the head, focusing more on the simple lines that make up the body and its clothes rather than details.

    • 6

Use the thick-point black marker to trace over your pencil lines.

    • 7

Use colored pencils or markers to color in the cartoon. Bold colors such as bright blues, reds, yellows, and greens are often used in cartoons and can help turn your own drawing into a cartoon. Color the body and facial features with broad swatches of color, emulating the lack of detail in the drawing with a lack of detail in the coloring.
