How to Remove Knotty Boy Dreadlocks

The stylists at the Knotty Boy Lock Shop and Salon in Vancouver, Canada are experts in creating dreadlocks using the backcombing method. Knotty Boy stylists make dreads by sectioning the hair, teasing it with a comb and palm-rolling the teased hair with wax. Realizing that some customers wanted to remove their dreads without cutting off all their hair, the Knotty Boy team created a dreadlock removal kit consisting of moisturizing shampoo, deep conditioner and a fine-toothed metal comb. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the bottom of each dread. How much you choose to cut off is up to you; cutting at least 1 inch will fray the ends, making the dreads easier to comb out.

    • 2

Fill a bathtub with the hottest water that you can stand. Lie back and soak your dreads for five to ten minutes.

    • 3

Lather your hair with the Knotty Boy shampoo included in the removal kit. Get your hair very sudsy, then rinse out the shampoo with more hot water.

    • 4

Massage the Knotty Boy conditioner into your hair, one dreadlock at a time. Squeeze each dread as you go to make sure that the conditioner completely penetrates it.

    • 5

Cover your hair with a shower cap and sit under a hood dryer or use a blow-dryer for 20 minutes. This will help the conditioner soak into the dreads, softening them considerably.

    • 6

Gather your dreadlocks into a ponytail on top of your head. Pull out one dreadlock at a time and pick it apart with the comb, starting 1/2 inch from the bottom. Work slowly up the dread, using the pick end of the comb when you encounter particularly troublesome snarls.

    • 7

Wash your dread-free hair with the Knotty Boy shampoo again to remove the residue trapped in your dreads, then follow with another application of the conditioner.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have access to the Knotty Boy kit, use a citrus-based shampoo and a thick deep conditioner. Comb out your locks with a metal flea comb, available in pet supply stores.
