Select the yarn. The size of the bootie will be determined by what kind of yarn you use. For baby booties, 3-ply sport weight and 2-ply baby yarn are suggested. Adult booties are commonly made from worsted weight or bulky yarn.

2
Measure the foot. Have the recipient stand with her feet flat on the floor with no socks. Measure from heel to toe. For babies, a good rule of thumb is 3-4 inches but it is better to measure if you aren't sure.

Choose your stitch. Garter stitch and stockinette stitch are easy for novices. Garter stitch is knit every row and stockinette stitch alternates knit and purl rows. Knitters who are more advanced can use eyelet and lace patterns.

Cast on enough stitches for the length you need. For example, if you want to make an 8-inch bootie, cast on 40 stitches and spread them out slightly. Measure with a ruler to see if it is the correct length. Take down or add some stitches until you get the right measurement. This will take some experimenting.

Work even in your chosen pattern until it it is a complete square. Cast off in pattern. Fold the square in half and sew up the ends to form the heel and toe. Weave in loose ends.
