Pom-poms add decorative details to knitted hats.

Adding a pompom to a knitted hat gives it a touch of whimsical style. You can purchase a pompom maker from a craft store or online craft retailer, but it is not necessary. You can create professional-looking pompoms using common household materials, such as cardboard and scissors.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a piece of cardboard on a flat surface. Adjust the compass so it makes a circle with a 5-inch diameter for a medium-sized pompom for an adult-sized hat. For a large pompom, adjust the compass to a 6-inch diameter. For a small pompom, adjust the compass to a 4-inch diameter.

    • 2

Draw two circles on the cardboard with the adjusted compass. Do not allow the circles to intersect on the cardboard; you need two separate circles.

    • 3

Adjust the compass so it makes a circle with a diameter half the size of the original circles. For example, if you made 5-inch-diameter circles, adjust the compass so the diameter will be 2 ½ inches.

    • 4

Draw one circle in the center of each of the larger circles with the newly adjusted compass. You now have two circles with two smaller circles within them.

    • 5

Cut the circles around the larger-diameter compass lines. Using the scissors, cut a line from one spot along the circle's edge to the compass-drawn line for the smaller circle. Cut out the smaller circle within the larger circle. Repeat this process for the other cardboard circle. You now have two cardboard circles with a smaller circle cut out of the middle of each.

    • 6

Hold the two cardboard circles together, lining up the cut-out holes in the center of each.

    • 7

Wrap the yarn from the outer edge of the circle through the center cut-out of the circle and back around, using the same yarn you used to knit the hat. Continue wrapping the yarn around the circles, completely covering the cardboard ring with yarn. Wrap the yarn until it is difficult to fit the yarn through the center of the circles.

    • 8

Cut a 6-inch length of yarn.

    • 9

Holding the two sides of the yarn-covered cardboard circles with one hand, carefully cut the yarn around the circle's perimeter between the two cardboard circles.

    • 10

Continue to hold the two sides of the yarn-covered circles; be careful not to let the circles slip once the yarn has been cut. Use the other hand to wrap the six-inch length of yarn from Step 8 around the center of the pompoms, sliding the piece of yarn between the two cardboard circles. Wrap the yarn tightly around the center of the circles, and tie it in a knot.

    • 11

Remove the cardboard circles from the pompom and fluff the cut yarn to disguise the center tie in the middle.
