Curtain off a section of your bedroom so baby has her own space.

Co-sleeping with a baby is a situation parents often have to deal with. Whether your reasons for sharing are lack of space, the baby's health issues or ease of breastfeeding, both baby and parents need privacy. The baby needs to have a secure space where he can sleep undisturbed by the activities around him, and the parents need privacy, too. A curtain may not be soundproof, but it offers visual privacy to everyone. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the bedroom from wall to wall. Double the measurement to determine the amount of curtain fabric that you need. For example, if the width of the room is 8 feet, you need 16 feet of curtain fabric, which would make two curtains that are each 4 feet wide.

    • 2

Decide on the length of the curtains and the height at which you want to install them. The most practical height is about 6 feet, as that should protect the baby from all light except an overhead fixture. The curtains should fall to a few inches above floor level.

    • 3

Choose fabric that is opaque enough to block out light that may disturb the baby but not heavy enough to make the room feel oppressive. Select a color that blends in with your existing bedroom furnishings.

    • 4

Hem each curtain along the sides, as well as the top and bottom edges. Stitch the heading tape along the top edges on the wrong side of the fabric. Tie one end of the heading tape cords into a knot and pull the other end until the curtain is pleated to the width that you require.

    • 5

Buy a curtain rod that fits the width of the bedroom. Mount the two curtain brackets on opposite walls using the wood screws, measuring carefully to ensure that they line up. Be careful not to mount the curtain rod so high that it is difficult to open and close the curtains.

    • 6

Insert curtain rings through the heading tape at regular intervals. The rings should be large enough to slide easily along the curtain rod. Alternatively, use plastic rings or fabric loops for a more silent curtain-opening mechanism.

    • 7

Fit the curtain onto the curtain rod and secure the rod in the two opposite brackets. The curtains can be opened to one side of the room together or one to each wall. The opening in the center may be convenient for you to access.
