Ombre-style hair has become popular among celebrities and models in the past year. The word ombre refers to a gradual increase or decrease of a shade of color. For hair, ombre-style means that your hair will be darkest at the roots and will gradually become lightest at the tips. You do not have to spend a lot of money in a salon, you can get ombre-style hair at home by yourself or with a friend's help. Does this Spark an idea?

      Choose a highlighting kit that is a shade or two lighter than your natural hair color.

      Cover your shoulders and chest with an old towel.

      Put on the gloves that came with the highlighting kit. Mix the ingredients following the instructions on the kit.

      Apply the highlighting mixture about halfway down the length of your hair. Depending upon how dark your original hair color is, you may need to wait 20 to 30 minutes for processing.

      Apply the rest of the mixture at the ends of your hair. Since this hair will be the lightest in color, you can wrap the ends in foil to expedite the processing. Depending on the lightness you desire, this section may take 30 to 35 minutes to process.

      Rinse your hair until the water runs clear. Follow any instructions on the highlighting kit, some come with an additional conditioning step.

Tips & Warnings

  • Periodically check your hair to see if it has achieved the color you desire. This is called a strand test because you do this with only a strand or two of the hair you are coloring.

  • Color hair in a well-ventilated area. Cover surfaces and items to avoid dying with the highlighting mixture.
