How to Make an M4R Song File
M4R files are used by Apple's iTunes media software as custom ringtones on an iPhone, allowing you to know who is calling before even picking up the phone. M4R files can be created out of any song or audio file, so long as the file type can be imported into iTunes.

Select the song you wish to turn into an M4R file from your digital music library.

Right click on the song and select "Show in Finder" on Mac OS X or "Show in Windows Explorer" on Windows. A window displaying the song on your computer will pop up.

Copy the song file and paste a copy on your desktop. This will be the version used as a backup.

Right click on the song in iTunes and select "Get Info." Change the start and stop times under the Options tab so that the selection is less than 30 seconds and click "OK."

RIght click on the song again and select "Create AAC Version." A new copy of the song, 30 seconds long, will appear in iTunes.

Right click on the song and select "Show in Finder" on Mac OS X or "Show in Windows Explorer" on Windows. Copy this song file to your desktop and rename the file type from M4A to M4R.

Delete the 30-second AAC version and the original version of the song from iTunes. When it asks whether you want to delete them from your library, select "Move to Trash."

Drag the backup copy of the original song from your desktop to iTunes to restore it in your library.

Drag the M4R file from your desktop into iTunes. This will copy the file into the ringtones section of iTunes, allowing you to use it as a custom ringtone on your iPhone.
