Burp cloths are rectangular or hourglass shaped pieces of fabric that are placed over a shoulder when burping a baby. Instructions

    • 1

Wash 1/2 yard of printed flannel and 1/2 yard of solid color flannel to preshrink them. Dry the flannel. Press them with an iron to remove wrinkles.

    • 2

Lay twp pieces of paper on a flat work surface. Line up the papers' short edges and tape them together to create a long paper rectangle. Measure out an 11-inch-by-17-inch rectangle on the surface of the paper with a measuring tape. Mark the rectangle on the paper with a pencil.

    • 3

Place a cup upside down near one corner of the rectangle. Trace around the bottom of the cup to create a rounded corner. Repeat this process in the remaining three corners. Cut out the rectangle with a pair of scissors.

    • 4

Lay both pieces of flannel, side by side with wrong sides up, on a flat surface. Lay the paper pattern on top of the first piece of flannel. Trace around the pattern with a fabric pencil to transfer it to the flannel. Repeat this on the second piece of flannel. Cut out the flannel rectangles with a pair of scissors.

    • 5

Lay one of the fabric rectangles, right side up, on the work surface. Place the second fabric rectangle, right side down, on top of the first. Match up the edges so they are even. Pin around the edges with straight pins to secure.

    • 6

Thread a sewing machine with thread. Sew a 1/2 inch seam around the edge of the layered rectangles. Remove the pins as you near them with the presser foot to avoid breaking the machine's needle. Leave a 3-inch space open along one of the ends of the rectangle. Clip any loose threads.

    • 7

Turn the burp cloth right side out through the 3-inch opening. Fold the open edges inward 1/2 inch and pin. Top stitch a 1/4-inch seam around the edge of the burp cloth to flatten the seam and close the opening. Clip any loose threads.
