How to Make Cat Scratchers

Cats have a natural instinct to scratch and dig their claws down vertical surfaces. One way to stop a cat from scratching the furniture is to provide an approved surface that the cat will enjoy scratching. Make your own simple cat scratcher out of carpet sample squares and a cheap unfinished wooden picture frame. Hang the cat scratcher on your wall to stop your kitty from scratching up your furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in your glue gun. When it becomes hot and the glue stick starts to melt, run a bead of hot glue around the edge of a 1/2-inch thick, 10-by-12 inch piece of cardboard. Center the carpet piece over the cardboard and then firmly press the back of the carpet down into the glue. Hold for one minute to ensure that carpet sticks to the cardboard.

Staple the corners of the carpet to the corners of the cardboard with a carpet staple gun. Staple the carpet 1/2 inch in from the corner to ensure that it isn't ripped off of the cardboard by your cat.

    • 3

Insert the carpet covered cardboard, carpet side first from the back of a wide 8 1/2-by-11 inch unfinished wooden picture frame so that the carpet sticks out the front of the picture frame. Set the framed carpet, carpet side down on your workspace. Staple the cardboard backing to the back of the picture frame with the carpet stapler.

Hold the cat scratcher on the wall, two feet up from the floor, or just high enough for your catch to stretch up and scratch it. Place a level on the top and use it to ensure that the scratcher is level, then use an electric screwdriver to drive a screw through the picture frame and into the wall. Position a screw at each corner of the frame, in the center of the corner and then drive it through the frame and into the wall to securely mount the cat scratcher.
