How to Decoupage Photographs Onto Fabric

Decoupage is an art technique used for decorating objects by gluing things on them in layers, using varnish for an inlaid effect. Accentuate this layering effect by adding fabric, paint or pictures. Brilliant fabrics make a colorful backdrop for decoupaging photos of family or friends, scenic locations, pets or flowers. Choose jewelry boxes, music boxes or shadow boxes as the base for your creation. Use a framed canvas to decoupage family photographs to preserve them in a unique way.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a decoupage base for your project such as wood, cardboard, canvas, metal or glass. If using wood, sand and dust to prepare it for decoupage. Paint or stain the wood, if desired. Allow it to dry. Cut cardboard to the exact size needed. Cut fabric with sharp scissors, leaving no frayed edges. Glue the fabric directly onto the chosen base using decoupage paste or glue and allow it to dry before proceeding. Carefully smooth the fabric to work out wrinkles as you go.

    • 2

Photocopy the picture(s) you plan to use. Use a high-quality laser printer or commercial printer to ensure picture sharpness. Cut out the photographs with sharp scissors or other cutting implement, such as a scalpel. Hold the scissors tilted slightly to the right to obtain a beveled edge.

    • 3

Lay the photograph(s) face down on a cutting board or similar surface. Use full-strength decoupage paste or glue. Brush the glue on the photograph, working from the center out to the edges. Place a small amount of glue directly on the fabric and spread it thinly before applying the photograph.

    • 4

Make sure you apply enough glue or paste. Place the photograph onto the surface of the fabric and make sure to center it. Use a rolling pin to smooth it out. Carefully check the edges to ensure they stick down completely. Use a paper towel or cloth to remove any excess glue.

    • 5

Apply several coats of varnish with a varnish brush to the photograph project. Allow it to dry between coats. After the varnish is completely dry, apply a thin coat of a good sealant for protection. Allow it to dry once again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to make copies of the photographs you want to use instead of using the originals.

  • Apply varnish in a well-ventilated area.
