How to Deal With an Unprofessional and Mean Boss
Your boss conveniently forgets his promises to you, burdens you with more tasks than is fair, is nepotistic or takes undue credit. You want to throw some choice words at him, but you love your job and the company, and have big plans for the future. It is possible to cope with your mean boss using practical strategies. A positive approach enables you to manage otherwise intolerable situations with your boss -- helping you concentrate on your professional goals instead.

1
Concentrate on doing your job well. Make it a habit not to let your boss' rude behavior affect your performance. Realize that by doing otherwise, you only give your boss more ammunition to target you.
-
2
Make your boss a source for propelling you forward in your job, rather than holding you back. Realize that although mean, your boss must possess some skills that earned him his position. Seek his expertise to learn what skills and performance standards you need to rise to a higher rank in your area.

Don't responding with anger to your boss' unfair criticisms or accusations. You may come to regret it and wish you had controlled your emotions, especially if it's a job you love. Record every incident of your boss' mean behavior in a notebook or journal -- sticking to the facts without becoming emotional. Analyze whether the incident affected your work performance and, if so, record that as well. Find out if your boss has a similar impact on your colleagues and their performance, and record any findings. Use the journal writing only as a therapeutic outlet for your stress. Take advantage of the journal later, when leaving the job -- giving it to a trusted supervisor in a decision-making position for possible action.
