How to Build an Origami Fig

The simple shape of a fig is ideal for a beginner's origami model.

Origami is particularly well-suited for the creation of nature-inspired models. The symmetrical forms of plants and animals allows origami figures to mimic their shape. The fig, essentially an oblong sphere that is pointed on one end, is among these. Using simple folds, you can create an inflatable paper model that closely resembles the fig in shape and appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Rotate the paper square so that one point is facing you. Fold the top tip down to meet the bottom tip, and then the right tip to meet the left. The paper should now form an inverted right triangle.

    • 2

Lift the top flap and squash it flat, creating a "mountain" fold on either side. The flap should resemble a diamond. Turn the paper over and repeat with the other flap. This shape is traditionally called the "square base."

    • 3

Lift one flap and squash it flat, making a kite-like shape. Fold it over to one side and repeat with the other four flaps. When finished, there should be two open kite-shapes with two others folded shut between them. This shape is sometimes called the fruit base.

    • 4

Fold the lower diagonal sides of each kite shape inward to the central vertical crease. This will resemble a diamond. Fold the four bottom tips out and up, as far as possible. These will extend between the four shapes, rather than up in front of them.

    • 5

Blow into the hole to inflate the paper like a balloon, creating the fig shape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Inflation is easier with larger sheets of paper and may require considerable force with smaller models. Use a brown piece of paper for realism. Try other colors and sizes for other fruits and berries.
