How to Make a Swiss Dot Pattern
Swiss dots are a classic option for decorating a wedding cake. You can place Swiss dots on a cake that is iced with buttercream or fondant, although the smoothness of fondant will make the dots stand out more. The Swiss dot pattern is achieved by piping icing into three dots to form a triangle. The dot triangles can be placed close together or far apart, depending on the desired look. One common technique is to place borders of Swiss dots along the top and bottom of each tier of the wedding cake. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Mark the positioning of the Swiss dots on the fondant or buttercream using a toothpick to make small marks. This will prevent errors when you are piping the dots. If you need to change one of the toothpick marks, simply smooth the fondant with your finger to erase the marking.

2
Fill your piping bag with white icing. Both buttercream and royal icing are suitable choices for piping. If using a bag with a nozzle, use one with a small, round tip. If cutting a hole at the corner of the piping bag, be sure to cut a small one.

Hold the piping bag with two hands, one near the bottom to guide the bag and one near the top to squeeze the icing through the nozzle or hole. Squeeze a small dot of icing at each marker you made on the fondant or buttercream.
