How to Make a Stretchy Cloth Headband for an Adult
Cloth headbands are fashionable and functional hair accessories. They are worn to achieve a stylish look, as well as to hold the front of the hair in place so that it doesn't fall into the eyes of the wearer. Cloth headbands are particularly useful in the fitness industry, where exercise enthusiasts need their hair to be tightly pulled back in order to see what lies ahead. Rather than spending money to purchase these headbands, you can save costs by making cloth headbands yourself with a few craft supplies that you may already have at home.

1
Wrap a measuring tape around your head in the place where you want to wear the headband. Write down the dimensions.
-
2
Cut a piece of elastic that is the same length as your head's circumference.

-
3
Lay the elastic band on your cloth fabric. Cut out the fabric so that it is 1/4 inch longer and wider than the elastic. Make a second strip of fabric so that your cloth wraps around the outside and underside of the elastic band.
-
4
Thread your needle. Sew one piece of fabric onto the elastic band at the edges. Tuck under the ends so that they do not stick out past the elastic band, or trim the ends with your fabric scissors. Repeat the process for the other side of the band with the second piece of cloth fabric.

5
Stitch both loose ends of the elastic and fabric strip together to create a loop. This is your headband. Or, if you want to adjust the headband, glue a strip of adhesive fasteners onto the ends so that the headband opens and closes at the fastening point.
-
6
Embellish your cloth headband. You can apply fabric appliques onto the headband by sewing them down, glue sequins to the headband or decorate with glitter glue.

Tips & Warnings
An alternative closure option is to cut the fabric so that it is 2 inches longer than the elastic on both ends. Leave the extra fabric unsewn so that you can close the stretchy headband by tying it together in a knot. To remove the headband, untie the knot.
