How to Build a Lace Pillow Stand

Pillow stands are classic and essential objects providing a suitable surface for lace making. Building an actual lace pillow stand involves adding lace trim to the outside of the pillow block. Once your pillow stand is created, you will have a surface both soft and firm enough to create lace. Set your finished stand in the corner of a living room, home office or basement for quick access at any time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Slide on work glasses, a dust mask and safety glasses to protect skin, lungs and eyes and prepare to work in a well-ventilated area.

    • 2

Cut the dimensions of your maple wood and panel board pillow table pieces with a standard saw. Sand every piece with 120 grit paper.

    • 3

Stain all of the pieces with wood stain. Follow directions on the wood stain container for proper application. Lather the wood pieces with a synthetic fiber paint brush. Allow a minimum of four hours for all pieces to dry before moving on.

    • 4

Create the base of the stand. Center the front base crossbar at the end of the front base arm to form a letter "T." Attach the pieces with wood glue. Hold and press the bonded area for 45 seconds to secure the attachment.

    • 5

Cut the hole for the tilt arm. Drill a hole at center in the tilt arm 4 inches from the end. Cut a narrow 1/4-inch hole in the wood that extends 8 inches long jigsaw. Sand the hole. The hole is necessary to hold the adjustable bolt. Place the tilt arm aside for use in later steps.

    • 6

Build the vertical stand arm. Stand one of the main uprights on its end in a vertical position. Drill a 1/4-inch center hole in this main upright, 6in down from the top. Place the upright against the right side of the base arm so it is flush with its free end. Glue the upright to the arm. Repeat with the second main upright for the left side of the arm. Drill 1/8-inch holes -- evenly spaced every 2-inch -- up the enter center of the 21-by-3-by-1/8-inch panel board. Place the panel board vertically, flush against the backside of the two uprights, so the center holes are visible. Glue the panel board into place.

    • 7

Build the top T-arm on which the Ethafoam will sit. Drill a hole at the center of the T-top arm piece with a 1/4-inch drill bit. Place the top T-top arm and cross bar pieces into a "T" formation, identical to the base "T" arm and crossbar. Bond the pieces together with wood glue.

    • 8

Attach one end of the tilt arm to the right vertical upright with a 1/4-inch nut and bolt. Fit the top "T" arm into place between the main vertical uprights. Attach the opposite end of the tilt arm to the top "T" bar with another 1/4in nut and bolt. Slide and secure a 2-by-1/8-inch bolt into the panel board hole just beneath the top "T" bar arm. Adjust the tilt bar bolts so the top "T" arm sits flush against the panel board bolt. The panel board bolt and the tilt arm help hold the top "T" bar in a flat and secure position.

    • 9

Build the foam pillow. Place the two 9-by-4-by-1/8-inch panel board pieces together -- one atop the other -- to form a "plus sign" or a cross. Glue the pieces together with wood glue. Glue the Ethafoam block to the top of the panel board cross. Bond the lace trim around the sides of the block with white glue. Center the foam pillow panel bar cross atop the top "T" bar. Bond the two pieces together with wood glue. Purchase Ethafoam at your local home supply store or through a specialized Ethafoam retailer.
