Diamonds, no matter what setting they are in, need certification to maintain their value. When you purchase a pair of diamond earrings without a certificate of authenticity you cannot obtain one at a later date; the problem with diamonds is that the origin, maker and other pertinent information cannot be traced without a certificate. Obtaining one is imperative to holding the value of your diamond; anyone can say that their diamonds are a certain value or origin, but without a certificate these claims cannot be proved. Purchase only certified diamonds. Jewelers sell both certified and uncertified diamonds in their retail locations. Uncertified diamonds do not come with paperwork or information regarding the value of the diamonds.

Obtain the certification for your diamond earrings at the time of purchase. Do not leave the jeweler without the certification in hand.

Check that the certification is from a reliable gemologist. Diamond experts recommend looking for certifications from GIA Graduate Gemologists; the name of the gemologist is provided on the certificate.
