Improve your Blogger's SEO for better search engine rankings.

Having a successful blog involves more than writing compelling copy and using attractive graphics. Maximizing your blog's reach involves performing search engine optimization (SEO) on a regular basis. SEO refers to increasing traffic to a website by improving its ranking for ranking on search engine result pages for relevant keywords.

If you use Blogger, Google's free blog publishing tool, improving the SEO of your blog involves modifying Blogger's settings and traditional SEO tactics such as keyword targeting.

Instructions

    • 1

      Include your target keywords and synonyms in your Blogger posts and post titles. For example, if your Blogger site is about New York City fashion, phrases you should use in your posts include "New York City fashion," "NYC fashion" and "New York City fashion trends."

    • 2

      Enter target keywords into the Tags field below the Blogger post editor before publishing a post. Tags are the equivalent of labels that tell visitors and search engines what a post is about. Leaving the Tags field blank is a missed SEO opportunity.

    • 3

      Edit the title tag convention within your Blogger template so that post titles become title tags. The default setting in Blogger makes your title tag the name of your blog. Changing this setting helps search engines discover the keywords in each of your post titles. Select the Edit HTML option from the Layout menu. Locate the the line of code "<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>" and replace it with the following code:

      <b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "index"'>

      <title><data:blog.title/></title>

      <b:else/>

      <title><data:blog.pageName/></title>

      </b:if>

      Save the template to apply the change.

      Contact other bloggers, and ask them to link to your Blogger site from their blog. Focus on contacting quality, authoritative sites because links from such sites are votes of confidence for your blog in the eyes of search engines.
