How to Harden Play-Doh

Play-Doh is the modeling clay that comes in many different colors and has been enjoyed by children for many years. Kids can use their hands and various other tools to create sculptures or items that they can show off to friends or use while playing. If your child has made something out of Play-Doh, it is possible to harden the dough to keep the item for a long period of time. Hardening Play-Doh involves placing it in the microwave.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of paper towel onto a microwave-safe plate. When your child is finished with her creation, carefully place it on the center of the plate. Make sure that no part of the item is hanging off the edge of the plate and that it is lying flat.

    • 2

Place the plate into the microwave and turn it on for one minute on the highest setting. When the minute is up, remove the plate from the microwave. You may notice that the dough has gotten softer. This is normal. Spray the creation with a little bit of water to wet it down.

    • 3

Place it back in the microwave for five more minutes. When it is finished, take it out and look it over. If there are any cracks, wet the area of the crack thoroughly until it is soft again and smooth out the Play-Doh to get rid of the cracks. Do this for any cracks you may see.

Place the creation aside and allow it to dry out for roughly 48 hours. During this time it is important not to touch it as pressing on the creation could cause it to crack or separate. If possible, place the creation under a bright light or outdoors in the sunlight during this time.
