How to Make a Crayon Roll-Up
Coloring is a common, go-to activity for children of all ages. This simple activity has a calming effect on little ones, and encourages creativity using crayons, markers, colored pencils and paper. Coloring is also a convenient way to occupy bored or restless children while running errands, and the supplies can be quickly tossed into your diaper bag or purse. One convenient coloring tool to have on hand is the crayon roll-up; a soft caddy that is made from fabric and designed to hold approximately 16 average-sized crayons.

1
Choose a fun, colorful fabric. Cut it into three 13- by 5-inch rectangles. These rectangles will be the back, front and pocket pieces for your crayon roll.
-
2
Fold one of the rectangle pieces in half lengthwise. Iron the fold. This will be the pocket piece to your crayon roll.
-
-
3
Place one of the rectangle pieces face-down on a flat, heat resistant surface. This will be the front piece to your crayon roll. Place a 13- by 5-inch interfacing on the back of the fabric. Smoothly iron it on.
-
4
Turn the front piece over and lay it face-up on your working surface. Lay the folded pocket piece on top of the front piece, with the folded edge facing the middle of the front piece.
-
5
Line up the bottom and side edges of both pieces, then mark your sewing lines. Start by measuring 1 1/4 inch from the left edge. Pin the fabric together, then measure and pin every 3/4 inch until you have 15 parallel lines. The last line should be 1 1/4 inches away from the right edge.
-
6
Start at the bottom, left edge of your pocket, and sew a vertical line up to the top edge of the pocket piece. Back-stitch at the top and bottom of the line to reinforce the stitching. Repeat this process for the remaining 15 lines.
-
7
Fold a 24-inch piece of ribbon in half. Line up the folded edge of the ribbon with the right edge of your crayon roll, and sew the ribbon onto the fabric.
-
8
Place the last rectangle piece of fabric -- the back piece -- over the front piece with attached pocket. Align the right edges and pin the two pieces together.
-
9
Sew around the outside edges of the pinned pieces, using a 1/4-inch seam. Leave a two-inch opening on the ribbonless side.
-
10
Trim the corners of the fabric to eliminate a bulky appearance. Turn your crayon roll right side out using the hole you left earlier. Use an iron to press the sides.
-
11
Use a pencil or chopstick to gently push the corners out and flatten the seams. Iron the entire roll flat. Push in the edges of the turning opening and stitch the hole closed.
-
12
Top stitch all the way around the crayon roll, keeping 1/8-inch away from the edges. Try using a fancy stitching pattern, such as the zigzag or blanket stitch.
-
13
Put the16 crayons into the pockets. Roll it from left to right, then tie the ribbon around it.
