How to Install Cables on Warn A2000 Winches
A Warn A2000 winch can be found on ATVs and automobiles. The winch is designed to pull or tow ATVs or vehicles when they get stuck. The cable of the winch is the main source that does the pulling, so it must be properly rolled up on the drum. Over time, the cable will fray or break and must be replaced. The new cable must be rolled up on the drum in a straight line and in layers so that all of the cable will fit.
Things You'll Need
- New Warn winch cable
- Open-end wrench set
- Large tree or another vehicle
- Protective gloves

1
Position the winch directly in front of a tree or another vehicle. Locate the cable retention hole on the side of the winch drum. Roll the drum so that the retention hole is on the bottom of the drum.
-
2
Push the end of the cable through the retention hole. Ensure that the end of the cable is flush with the back side of the retention hole. Tighten the cable retention bolt down tight against the cable and the drum with a open-end wrench.

3
Roll the new cable out and position it so that it is in front of the winch. Wrap the end of the cable with the hook around the tree or around a secure area on another vehicle.
-
4
Place the transmission in neutral on the vehicle that the winch is mounted to. Engage the winch and slowly allow the winch to pull the cable around the drum. As the cable is being wrapped around the drum, the vehicle will move forward toward the tree or the other vehicle.
-
5
Guide the cable as it is wrapping around the spool with your hands. Ensure that the cable is wrapping around the drum straight. The cable should make a new wrap every time it turns around the drum. The cable should also layer itself on top of each previous layer in a straight manner. If necessary, apply a small amount of pressure in the proper direction with your hands as the cable is being wrapped around the drum.
-
6
Turn the winch off and unhook the other end of the cable from the tree or the other vehicle. Finish wrapping the cable around the drum by using your hands to finish guiding the remaining cable around the drum.
