How to Reduce Float in Java

Java provides a beneficial platform for creating financial and accounting software. The code does not compile until the user runs the software, so Java is platform-independent. A "float" data type indicates that the number has a decimal value. You use the subtraction character to reduce a float number to a lower value. Java has precision capabilities, so reducing a float variable by a decimal results in a fraction.

Instructions

    • 1

      Right-click the Java source code file you want to edit and select "Open With." Click the Java compiler in the list of programs.

    • 2

      Create a float type variable to contain the final result. The following code creates a variable in Java:

      float var1 = 6.374;

      float result = 0;

    • 3

      Reduce the decimal by 1.5. The following code reduces the var1 variable by 1.5 and the value "4.874" is stored in "result":

      result = var1 - 1.5;
