How to Fix Dust in Hardword Floors

Dust can damage a hardwood floor's finish.

Dust and dirt from foot traffic, pets, furniture, drapery and household items can accumulate on hardware floors, eventually getting into the cracks between floorboards. Over time, dust can cause scratches and dull the floor's finish. Homeowners must remove dust from the floor before applying new stain or finish, and regularly should control dust to extend the life of the wood.

Things You'll Need

• Canister vacuum with brush attachment or broom with fine, exploded ends
• Soft rags
• Mineral spirits

Instructions

1. Thoroughly vacuum the floor using a brush attachment. If you don't have an appropriate vacuum cleaner, sweep the floor with a broom that has fine, exploded ends designed to trap dust.

2. Thoroughly scrub the floor with a soft rag dampened with mineral spirits to remove caked dust and dirt that sweeping didn't pick up.

3. Exchange the rag with a clean one when it becomes dirty.
