How to Make a Sombrero for Kids
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo or teach children Mexican history with a sombrero craft. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the large brimmed sombrero hat is derived from the Spanish word sombra, which means to give shade. Wealthy Mexicans wore sombreros made from felt, while commoners wore straw hats. The sombrero is also the predecessor of the American cowboy hat. Make a sombrero for kids with old newspapers. An adult should assist children by fitting the newspaper over the child's head, using masking tape to secure.

1
Stack the 3 or 4 newspapers into a neat pile. Place them centrally over a child's head and press down.

-
3
Trim the newspaper around the child's head so it forms a circle shape. Be sure to keep the brim wide, approximately 5-inches from the head. Remove it from the child's head.
-
4
Roll the brim up around the hat about 1 inch, securing with masking tape. Paint the entire top of the sombrero using a paintbrush. Dark colors work well for this project to cover the print.
-
5
Punch out holes around the edge of the brim, approximately 2 inches apart, with a paper hole puncher. Thread yarn or string through the holes to decorate. Wrap the crown of the hat with yarn and tie a knot. Trim excess yarn with scissors.
