How to Buy a Lumber Grading Stick
A certified wood grader uses a lumber grading stick as part of his duties. The grader is responsible for determining the quality of raw lumber logs and determining how much and what kind of finished lumber a log represents. The standards are set by the National Hardwood Lumber Association and the training to become certified is based upon its requirements. A grading stick is similar in size and shape to a yardstick, and is used to measure logs and quickly convert the measurement to available board feet.

Browse through the online catalogs of LogRite Tools, Bailey's or other suppliers of lumberjack and woodworking tools. Call the business before visiting in person to make sure it has a brick-and-mortar retail store.

2
Find the grading stick that best matches your needs. Sticks come in both metal or wood, with an inexpensive one retailing for about $30 (in 2011).

3
Investigate features that make using the grading stick easier. Some sticks come with a handle for a good grip; others feature a crayon holder attached to one end for marking lumber without having to bend.

4
Purchase your stick. If you can't find a store near you that carries them, there are online stores that do.
