Adjust the format of a date-and-time field in an Access database.

The Microsoft Office software package includes Microsoft Access, a relational database program that lets users store and organize large sets of information. One of the first steps of building an Access database is to define the field structure of your database's primary table. Access lets you choose from among different types of fields, including one that is specially designed to store date and time information. After creating a date-and-time field, you can adjust its format to determine how the hours, minutes and seconds will be displayed.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the Microsoft Access program on your PC.

    • 2

Open the Access database file in which you want to add a date-and-time field.

    • 3

Right-click the name of your primary table from the list on the left side of the screen and choose the "Design View" option. Access will now display the table's field structure.

    • 4

Place your text cursor in the first blank cell in the "Field Name" column and fill it in with the name that you want to use for the field.

    • 5

Move to the "Data Type" column, click the arrow button and select the "Date/Time" setting.

    • 6

Go to the "General" tab in the "Field Properties" panel at the bottom of the screen.

    • 7

Click the arrow button in the "Format" row and choose the way you want the hours, minutes and seconds to be displayed in your new field.

    • 8

Click the "File" button in the upper left corner and press "Save" to update your table's field structure.
