How to Make a Woven Heart-Shaped Paper Basket
You can make a heart-shaped woven paper basket using two pieces of construction paper. Use two different colors of paper to make the woven portion stand out. Make woven heart baskets with your children or elementary school class for Valentine's Day to hold candy and cards. You can also make woven heart baskets to give as gifts to family members and friends. Add a length of ribbon to the top of your basket to create a handle.
Things You'll Need
- 1 piece red construction paper
- 1 piece pink construction paper
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- 1/2-inch ribbon
Instructions

1
Fold one piece of red construction paper crosswise in half. Find the center point of the fold. Cut across the folded paper with scissors, starting at the center point on the folded edge and moving toward the center point of the open ends. Discard one folded half. Repeat this process with one piece of pink construction paper.
-
2
Lay the folded rectangle of red construction paper on top of the folded rectangle of pink construction paper. Position the folded ends of each color of paper on the same side. Make sure the edges are even. Cut around the open ends of the sandwiched paper with scissors to round them.
-
-
3
Set the red folded rectangle on the work surface. Lay a ruler across the folded edge. Make three evenly spaced marks across the surface of the paper with a pencil. Move the ruler to the opposite end of the paper, just below the point where the edges begin to curve. Make three marks in the same locations across the paper's surface.
-
4
Use the ruler to connect the corresponding upper and lower marks. Draw a line between each set of marks to connect them. Cut along the lines with a pair of scissors. There should now be three slits in the paper, creating four equal strips joined together at the curved end. Create slits in the same manner in the piece of pink construction paper.
-
5
Lay the folded piece of pink construction paper vertical on a flat surface. Position the paper so the rounded end is on top with the strips pointing downward. Lay the folded piece of red construction paper below the pink paper. Position the red paper so that it is horizontal with the rounded end on the right. The ends of the strips in the red paper should be even with the left side of the pink paper.
-
6
Weave the top red paper strip around and through the strips of pink paper. Slide the rightmost strip of the pink paper inside the top strip of the red paper. Slide the top red strip through the second pink strip. Slide the third pink strip inside the top red strip. Slide the top red strip inside the fourth, and leftmost, pink strip.
-
7
Repeat the weaving process with the second red strip, this time weaving it in the opposite manner as the top strip. Start by sliding the second red strip through the leftmost pink strip. Work the second red strip around and through the remaining pink strips.
-
8
Weave the third red strip in the same manner as the first red strip. Weave the fourth red strip in the same manner as the second red strip. Slide the red heart upward into the pink heart as you weave each red strip with the pink ones.
-
9
Squeeze the sides of the woven heart toward each other to pop open the top of the basket. Cut a 6-inch length of 1/2-inch wide ribbon. Glue one end of the ribbon to the inside center of one side of the basket. Glue the opposite ribbon end to the inside center of the opposite side of the basket to create a handle.
