DIY Metal Locator

DIY Metal Locator thumbnail
Coin collectors often use metal locators to find special coins.

Treasure hunters and various hobbyists around the world use metal detectors regularly to search for relics. Metal coins and other valuable objects hidden in the ground are detected by the metal detector, which makes an audible sound every time a metal object is close by. However, various relic aficionados and amateurs are put off by the high cost of metal detectors in stores. A more cost effective alternative is to build your own metal detector to practice finding relics and treasure hunting.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the CD case and detach the plastic part that usually holds the CD in the case.

    • 2

Cut a small strip of Velcro and stick the piece to the back of the AM radio. Connect the remaining side of the Velcro piece to the back of the CD case in a position that allows the radio to face upward when attached to the CD case.

    • 3

Cut a second piece of Velcro with scissors. Attach one side of the Velcro piece to the back of the scientific calculator. Attach the other side of the piece of Velcro inside the CD case so when you place the calculator inside the CD, the calculator is facing upwards.

    • 4

Turn on the AM radio. Tune the radio so it is on the highest broadcasting channel. You should hear only static on the radio.

    • 5

Turn on the scientific calculator and open the CD case slightly.

    • 6

Test the metal detector by placing it near a metal object. A lone tone will be audible when you place the metal detector near a metal object.
