How to Deal With an Unbearable Boss
Each manager you come across throughout your career has a different personality. Some may appear easygoing, while others grate your nerves from the time you clock in until the time you clock out. If you're trying to deal with an unbearable boss, understand that the status quo simply will not work. Your options for dealing with your boss effectively range from bettering yourself as an employee to making a formal complaint about your manager's behavior.

1
Review your job performance if your boss is harping about it. Even if your performance isn't as poor as your boss claims, you may be able to do something to improve it. For example, if your boss expresses his frustration over your sales numbers, attempt to improve your techniques to close the deal.

2
Assist your boss. Managers sometimes become overwhelmed and swamped with the amount of work they must complete. This can lead to what employees perceive as annoyance and anger. Helping your boss complete a task can go a long way to improving your relationship with him.

3
Ignore rants and undeserved criticism. The best way to deal with an unbearable boss is to ignore him when he acts inappropriately. Understand that he's not lashing out at you personally. When he begins to unload his frustrations in the workplace, attempt to ignore it and go on with your work.
-
4
Talk to your boss one-on-one. Explain that his actions make you feel uncomfortable and it's becoming increasingly difficult to complete your work with the way he manages. If your co-workers have expressed the same sentiments, tell him that others in the workplace feel the same way. Avoid revealing names, unless your co-workers authorized you to do so.
-
5
Report your boss. If your manager continues to act inappropriately, file a complaint with human resources or his boss. Review your company's policy on how to file complaints. Your complaint likely will not be acted upon unless your boss is acting completely out of line. If he becomes angry easily, it's unlikely the company will come down hard and discipline your boss. But, if he violates company policy, there will be repercussions.
