Tutorial on When to Use Bounce on Canon Speedlite 580EX
Novice flash photographers may be frustrated with the results of a shoot with the Canon 580EX. The subjects are brightly lit, but the images are not pleasing to the eye. It is not enough to have the right amount of light to get a good photograph (the function of a flash); it is equally important to control the light, to aim it so that you get the proper results. One way to control the light from a high-powered Canon 580EX flash is to bounce it.
Instructions
-
Aim the light
-
1
Hold down the "Push" button at the middle of the unit and adjust the angle of the 580EX head so it is at 45 degrees.
-
2
Hold the "Push" button down and rotate the flash head to adjust the direction of the flash. Rotate the flash head up to 180 degrees either right or left.
-
-
3
Mimic the effect of light coming through a window by imaging a window to the side of your subject and aiming the flash at the window.
-
4
Use a reflective surface, such as a white wall or ceiling, to get the best exposure.
-
5
Adjust the flash head to a 90-degree vertical angle if the flash intensity is creating harsh shadows.

Tips & Warnings
Press the "lightening bolt/H" button on the flash head to set the unit into High-Speed Synch mode. This allows you to shoot in aperture priority and shoot at lower or medium apertures to blur out the background with backlit subjects.
Do not use the 580EX's wide panel when shooting in bounce flash mode, as the light will look unnatural.
