How to Format and Reinstall Snow Leopard on a Mac
Mac OS X is a UNIX-based operating system that Mac released in 2000 as as version 10.0, or "Cheetah." Beginning with version 10.5, OS X has been designed to run on the Intel processors included in all newer Macs. Mac OS X 10.6 is called Snow Leopard and is the first Intel-only OS from Apple for Mac. Although Mac tends to be more maintenance-free than Windows installations, sometimes it is still necessary to reformat your hard drive and reinstall the OS.

Make a backup copy of any files and data you wish to save. Reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling the OS will erase all of your data, giving you a clean drive.

Insert the Snow Leopard DVD into the Mac's drive.

Reboot the computer. Hold down the "C" key while the computer boots to boot from the disc.

Follow the onscreen instructions on the installation wizard. When the wizard asks if you want to keep your information and data, click "NO" and select "Clean installation" from the available options.

Allow the installer to erase your hard drive and install Snow Leopard. Remove the disc when the installer is finished and reboot your Mac.
