How to Get Unghosted on Craigslist

"Ghosting" occurs when your Craigslist ad appears when you manually enter the URL in your browser, but it is not linked from the Craigslist category page. There are several reasons your ad may have been ghosted, such as excessive posting from the same IP address, duplicating content or numerous external links or images on your ad. Although you can edit your current ad to make it appear, it is usually better to delete it and start over, because the new ad appears at the top of Craigslist, whereas the edited ad appears where it was originally intended.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the Craigslist confirmation email you should have received, and click the "Edit" link. On the resulting page, you'll find a link to edit or delete the ad. If you plan to start over, choose to delete the ad. Likewise, delete any other posts from the past seven days that contains similar content.

    • 2

Choose to create a new post, just as you did before. If you chose to edit the existing ad, follow the edit link in the email, and click "Edit."

    • 3

Make your posting title concise and descriptive. Avoid all caps, special characters or spam-like catch-phrases, which can automatically flag your post as spam. If the ad has a field for physical location, such as real estate listings, enter the single most relevant area, rather than listing multiple cities.

    • 4

Create a minimal description, which is concise, descriptive and doesn't read like an infomercial. Avoid using text from previously posted ads. Remove all links and external images from your postings. Although links and external links are allowed, they can still cause your ad to get ghosted. Use Craigslist-hosted images, if you need to display a photo.

    • 5

Submit the new ad or save your changes to your current ad.

    • 6

Wait 15 minutes and refresh the category page to verify the ad appears.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're still ghosted, your IP address might be flagged. If that's the case, try posting from a friend's computer, or use a proxy to conceal your real IP address.

  • If you absolutely need to include external links in the ad, choose to edit the newly unghosted ad to include them. However, do not add numerous links at once, as this will likely cause your ad to be flagged again.
