How to Finish a Bookcase
When you choose to build your own bookcase, staining it will be one of the final tasks in your project. Also, if you've purchased a bookcase, especially one that is vintage or unfinished, you may need to stain it too to increase its longevity. Either way, it's a task that will pay off in the future. However, finishing the wood by applying at least one protective coat of a smooth stain is not just functional, it can also improve its appearance. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 150 grit sandpaper
- Tarp
- Paintbrushes
- Wood stain
- Polyurethane finish
- 320 grit sandpaper

Take out the shelves if you already put them in. You'll want to finish them separately.

Use 150 grit sandpaper to rough up all of the surfaces of the bookcase that you plan to finish.

Place a tarp down beneath the bookcase to protect your floor. Lay the shelves face up on the tarp.

Brush on a coat of wood stain first using a paintbrush. Let it dry completely. Wipe any drips with a rag.

Add a coat of polyurethane finish once the stain is dry using a paintbrush. This will provide long lasting protection for the bookcase.

Wait for the first coat of finish to dry. Sand the surface with 320 grit sandpaper, and apply a second coat. Once the second coat is dry, sand again and apply a third.

Put the shelves back in place once the third coat of polyurethane finish is dry.
