Instructions

    • 1

Take out the shelves if you already put them in. You'll want to finish them separately.

    • 2

Use 150 grit sandpaper to rough up all of the surfaces of the bookcase that you plan to finish.

    • 3

Place a tarp down beneath the bookcase to protect your floor. Lay the shelves face up on the tarp.

    • 4

Brush on a coat of wood stain first using a paintbrush. Let it dry completely. Wipe any drips with a rag.

    • 5

Add a coat of polyurethane finish once the stain is dry using a paintbrush. This will provide long lasting protection for the bookcase.

    • 6

Wait for the first coat of finish to dry. Sand the surface with 320 grit sandpaper, and apply a second coat. Once the second coat is dry, sand again and apply a third.

    • 7

Put the shelves back in place once the third coat of polyurethane finish is dry.
