How to Get Out of Awkward Questions
It could be a first date asking you awkward questions about your former relationships. It could be your mother, asking uncomfortable questions about your employment situation. It could just be a stranger at a party, asking personal questions you'd rather not answer. Getting out of awkward questions is tricky. You have to change the subject subtly, without being rude to the other person, who might not even realize that the question was awkward.

1
Change the subject. Say something like, "Oh, I don't want to bore you with that. Tell me more about your trip to Greece!" Divert the conversation to a subject that the other person will enjoy discussing, and he might forget about the original question.
-
2
Be direct. A simple "I'd rather not talk about it" often suffices. If the question is downright inappropriate, as when someone asks you about your sexual history. Tell her that you consider the question off-limits.

3
Make a joke. A recent college graduate unsure of what he wants to do with his life can answer the inevitable "So what's the next step?" with something like, "well, I've always wanted to design a line of designer dog sweaters." Look the other person in the eye and laugh, so she knows it's a joke.
