Always leave a long enough tail to weave into the block.

You have likely snuggled up under a warm afghan at some point in your life, especially if someone in your family likes to crochet and knit. Afghans are large, crocheted blankets made out of colored yarn. When making an afghan, you eventually add new yarn when you run out of the first ball with a process called joining yarn. Stick to the same color to create a uniform afghan or switch colors for a multicolored design.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin an afghan stitch. Work along the row until you notice that you have about six to eight nches worth of yarn left to crochet.

    • 2

Fold the end of your new yarn so you have a loop to feed through your last stitch. Feed the loop so it sticks through the last stitch and put the end of your crochet hook through the loop.

    • 3

Drop the old tail from the first ball of yarn and continue stitching using the new thread. TWo tails hang down from your block but you eventually weave these ends into the stitch once the block is complete.

    • 4

Tuck in the tails by threading the end of the tail onto a plastic sewing needle. Weave the tails so they go up and down through the individual stitches of the block until you run out of thread. Repeat this step to hide and transition tails.
