Soak all-metal, diamond and ruby earrings in a bowl for 15 minutes. Fill the bowl with a soapy solution made of equal parts distilled water and all-purpose cleaning fluid. Do not use this technique with pearls or other soft stones. Brush the earrings gently with a soft toothbrush and leave them out to dry in the open air. Avoid using a brush to clean jewelry containing stones set with glue.
Alternatively, use vodka rather than soapy water. Place diamond earrings in a shot glass filled with vodka for 30 minutes. Brush them with a toothbrush and then rinse under running water.

Bring diamond earrings to an ultrasonic cleaner, if desired, but consult an expert before exposing other gems to this method.
