How to Use Load Binding Straps

How to Use Load Binding Straps thumbnail
Securing a load requires a variety of straps, chains and pulleys.

All loads that will travel must be secured. Flatbed trucks and other open methods of shipping require the load to be secure so it won't spill during transport. Enclosed trucks, containers, ships and planes also need their loads to be secured so weight will not suddenly shift and make it impossible to guide the vehicle. The shipping industry utilizes binding straps to secure loads. Familiarize yourself with how to use them so you can strap any load to its carrier and know it is safe.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch rubber straps across tarp. If you have covered a load with tarp, you can use rubber straps with hooks on the ends to hold the tarp down. Hook one end in the truck bed frame and stretch the strap across the tarp. Hook the other end to the truck bed frame.

    • 2

Pull winch straps across the load. These are typically made of nylon. Secure one end by looping it through the holes in the frame of the transport vehicle. Then use a winch to pull the strap tight across the load. Leave the winch in place during transport.

Pull nylon or polyester ratchet straps across the load by hooking one end to the transport vehicle's frame and using the attached ratchet handle to tighten the strap down. Lock the ratchet handle in place when you are finished.

    • 4

Throw chains across heavy loads. Loop both ends through the holes in the vehicle's frame. Hook a chain puller --- sometimes called a come-along --- to the ends of the chain. Ratchet the come-along until the chain is tight across the load. This method is used for heavy loads.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put a twist in straps to keep them from blowing in the wind.

  • Overtightening straps or chains can cause them to break.
