Remove any visible dust mites by brushing them into a container. Scrape any mold growth as dust mites are attracted to these types of substances. Dispose of all mites to prevent them from scattering around your home.
-
2
Place the book in an area that receives direct exposure to sunlight. Set up a dehumidifier to maintain low levels of humidity in your home. Keep the humidity in your home below 30 percent.

3
Insert packages of silica granules inside of boxes where books are stored. Silica granules will help reduce moisture which is the leading cause of dust mites in the home.
-
4
Spray insecticides around the home and bookcase where evidence of dust mites have been found. Apply the insecticide inside small cracks and crevices where the mites may reside. It may take up to 14 days for the dust mites to die.
-
5
Wipe down the cover of the book with a clean, damp cloth. Damp clothes are used to prevent the dust mites from scattering into the air when removed. Discard of the washcloth or rinse it thoroughly when finished.

6
Place the book in the microwave for 45 seconds on high. Heating the book will kill all living dust mites and their eggs. Books can also be placed in the freezer with the temperature set on 0 degrees Fahrenheit for a full 24 hours.
-
7
Protect the outside of the book with a plastic book cover. Leave no spaces for old dust mites to leave or new ones to enter. Using a book cover will also prevent further damage to the outside of the book.
-
8
Vacuum the inside and outside of the book with a soft brush vacuum attachment. Turn the book upside down when cleaning the edges to allow the dust mites to fall down and not into the pages.
