How to Troubleshoot a P&H Hoist

A company needs all types of heavy equipment when working a mining operation. The operator may use a P&H electrical shovel, which has a hoisting mechanism to move the loads of excavated dirt. As the operator, you should perform periodic checks concerning the hoisting function to address any issues that could cause serious malfunctions. You should also troubleshoot any unusual problems, such as strange noises, unexplained leaks and electrical malfunctions.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure all safety precautions are taken before inspecting the hoisting equipment. Cordon of the area around the machine from unauthorized workers. Check that all braking systems are in place to prevent the machine from moving to prevent anyone becoming injured.

    • 2

Inspect the electrical system if the hoist mechanism cannot receive the necessary power. Check the two motors that power the hoist. Note for any loose or frayed wiring. Tighten any loose bolts found in the motor housing.

    • 3

Check the hoist gear case for damaged gears. Visually inspect for kinked or leaking oil lines that lube the bearings.

    • 4

Ensure wire rope has no frayed or twisted lines. Inspect for potential breakage. If the line hangs out of shape, inform the supervisor or maintenance manager, so a new wire rope can be ordered and installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always review the manufacturer's manual regarding the hoist mechanism. Most manuals outline the proper procedures in detecting the reasons for certain issues, such as squealing bearings or hydraulic leaks. Follow the guidelines in fixing or replacing the equipment to ensure it is brought back to optimum performance.
