How to Crochet a Cape
An elbow-length cape in a soft, chunky yarn can be an elegant addition to evening wear or a simple blouse. Start crocheting from the back edge and work around to the front. Add a fancy edging all around if you like.
Things You'll Need
- 400 yards chunky-weight (size standard 5) yarn
- Size M (9 mm) crochet hook
Instructions

-
1
Crochet a foundation chain 15 inches long with an even number of stitches. Add three stitches.
-
2
Wrap the yarn once around the hook and insert the hook in the fourth chain. Draw up another loop onto the hook, catch the yarn again and draw it through two loops, then draw through two loops again to complete a double crochet.
-
-
3
Skip the next chain stitch and work two double crochets in the sixth chain. Repeat across to the end of the chain, working two double crochets in every second chain stitch. Work a third double crochet in the last chain. Chain three and turn.
-
4
Work a double crochet in the same stitch as the turning chain. Make two double crochets in the center of each V of double crochets across, three in the last V (the starting or turning chain). Chain three and turn. Work four more rows this way, increasing one double crochet at the end of each row.
-
5
Chain nine at the end of each of the next six rows. Turn and begin working back along that chain as you did on the first row, making the first double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook. Chain three at the end of the seventh row.
-
6
Work even on these stitches for 6 inches. At the start of the next six rows, decrease for the neck: Do not complete the V at the start, but make the first V of double crochets in the second V in from the edge.
-
7
Work one more row around the back of the neck. Chain three and slip stitch to the preceding row.
-
8
Work single crochet around all edges. Work three single crochets in one stitch to turn a corner. Fasten off.
