How to Block Knit a Stocking

Block knit your stockings for the extra give you require.

Applying knitting techniques in your work requires knowledge and understanding of the material with which you are working. Additionally, in order to prevent a self-made garment from looking sloppy, it is essential that you "block" -- a process that adds extra room in specific areas -- your garment pieces before seaming them together. For delicate fabric such as stocking, use steam blocking as a means of accomplishing the extra room your garment requires.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat, padded surface
  • Steam iron
  • Colorfast towels
  • Rust-proof T-pins
  • Pressing cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the steam iron into the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Pin the pieces of your stocking to a padded, flat surface.

    • 3

Place a pressing cloth over the stocking. Press the iron lightly against the surface of the cloth allowing the steam to permeate through the fabric.

    • 4

Pin the fabric to the board in the shape you desire. Allow the stocking to dry and continue knitting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not place the iron directly on the stocking as they will likely melt.
