How to Build a Shadow Puppet Screen

How to Build a Shadow Puppet Screen thumbnail
Shadow puppets can come in many shapes and forms.

From the movement of hands to the shapes of cut-out paper, shadows are cast from a variety of objects and can easily be made into puppets. Shadow puppetry has existed for thousands of years throughout the world, though it originated in China. Like any actors, the puppets were given a stage on which to perform -- essentially a screen. This is simple to create at home and provides the perfect platform, either for yourself or children, on which to act out their favorite stories with shadow puppets.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bottom of the box using the crafting knife. Separate the sides of the box -- they will be glued together. This will allow the box to lie flat. Cut off one of the long sections of the flat box. This will create three sections of the flattened box, with two smaller sections on either side and a long section in the middle.

    • 2

Cut a hole in the remaining long side of the box, with a 4-inch border left all around the edge, using the crafting knife. Discard the cut-out cardboard piece.

    • 3

Place the translucent paper over the opening on the inside of the box. Trim it with the knife so it only overlaps the opening by 1 inch. Attach it using tape, without allowing the tape to show in the window of the box.

    • 4

Paint the front of the theater as you desire. Reinforce the top and bottom of the screen, as well as the sides, if needed, with tape.

    • 5

Perform with your hands or puppets in your new theater for friends and family.
